Job Description

The Department of Linguistic at Brigham Young University is excited to announce a position for a FT faculty position in the field of Linguistics. This position, with a 'continuing faculty status' akin to tenure track, entails teaching largely courses aimed at Editing and Publishing majors and minors and possibly other areas in the Linguistics Department such as the TESOL, English Language, or Linguistics programs. Our unique Editing and Publishing program offers students a profound understanding of linguistics alongside practical knowledge and skills in editing and publishing. Thus, all candidates should be capable of teaching key courses in the Editing and Publishing major (https://ling.byu.edu/editing-and-publishing-ba) in addition to their scholarly and teaching expertise in other areas of linguistics. The Linguistics Department provides a supportive, collaborative atmosphere that contributes to the development of faculty research agendas enhancing the scholarly discipline of Editing and Publishing and other areas of Linguistics.Duties/Expectations: Under a 10-month contract, primary responsibilities will encompass:--Teaching at least six courses annually, predominantly within the Editing and Publishing major/minor but also possibly in the Linguistics or Applied English Linguistics majors or minors or the TESOL Minor, TESOL MA, or Linguistics MA programs--Conducting and disseminating original research in reputable journals, books, or other scholarly outlets, particularly with the support of the Department of Linguistics Editing and Publishing Research Group--Mentoring students in scholarly research, research presentations, peer-reviewed article publication, and grant writing--Contributing to other departmental or college duties, including student advising, thesis chairing, program coordination, committee service, sharing governance, and disciplinary involvement

Academic Qualifications

Ph.D. in a field pertinent to editing and publishing, including linguistics, publishing studies, English language, language acquisition, writing studies, composition, English rhetoric, or technical/professional communication. The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience Requirements

All candidates must have:--Proficiency to teach core editing and publishing courses, encompassing grammar of English, basic (copy) editing, substantive editing, and/or editing for publication--Evident potential for or substantiated record of scholarly research in editing, linguistics, or related fields--Commitment to mentoring students effectively in and out of class--Desire to contribute strategically to the enhancement of a substantial undergraduate editing and publishing major--Willingness to support student faith through obvious commitment to the religious expectations of the sponsoring institution (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)Ideal candidates would have some of the following:--Professional experience in editing or publishing, with expertise in areas that might include copywriting, trade books, scholarly publications, fiction, textbooks, journals, magazines, digital publishing, or publishing business--Established connections within the publishing industry, fostering valuable professional networks--Ability to contribute to Honors and MA thesis advisement (reader and/or chair roles)--Ability to bridge personal scholarship with linguistics and editing/publishing--Keenness to collaborate with students on diverse research projects, both faculty-led and student-driven--Understanding of linguistics, enabling the teaching of general linguistics or English language courses--Enthusiasm to support the transition of the Department of Linguistics Faculty Publishing Service (FPS) into a dynamic research and teaching hub (https://ling.byu.edu/faculty-publishing-service)
